A research scientist is required to carry out research on polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEM-FC)

Posted: 07-Dec-2013                ACTIVE until position is filled

Qualifications: PhD in the physical sciences (chemistry, biochemistry, physics, or a discipline with clear connections to either instrumentation or environmental biochemistry)

Required Skills: Ability to work independently, with good oral and written communication skills is essential. Track record of managing projects, preparing publications and working in a multidisciplinary setting is needed. Prior experience in X-ray microscopy is desirable but is not required. You should have demonstrated skills at instrument & technique development. Familiarity with NEXAFS spectroscopy, and the synchrotron environment are useful assets.

Job Description: I am seeking a postdoctoral fellow interested in using advanced synchrotron based materials analysis tools to help advance materials for automotive polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEM-FC). Our focus is on developing in situ and eventually operando instrumentation for scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM). A major focus would be improving, commissioning and using an environmental cell (controlled humidity and temperature) to allow STXM studies under realistic sample conditions. This project os co-funded by the Automotive Fuel Cell Co-operation (AFCC) and an NSERC Collaborative Research & Development grant. You will collaborate with Dr. Slava Berekjonv (AFCC) and report in part to AFCC through him as well as to me.

Location: The position will be within the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology and affiliated with the Brockhouse Institute for Materials Research at McMaster University. A significant portion of your time (~25%) will be spent at X-ray microscopes (at the CLS, Saskatoon and at ALS, Berkeley).

Remuneration will be based on the qualification of the successful applicant.

Candidates should apply electronically with curriculum vitae, description of expertise in instrumentation, and names, e-mail addresses, and telephone numbers of three referees to:

Dr. Adam P. Hitchcock

Applications will be considered as they are received. Position is open until filled.
A condition of employment will be that the candidate is eligible for multiple entries to the USA.
